Scanning multi-page documents: choose PDF at the scanner

The office scanner asks a small question with long consequences: save as TIFF, PDF or JPEG? For a multi-page document, picking wrong means fighting the file every time someone needs a page out of it.

What each choice commits you to

• JPEG gives you one file per page — fine for a single receipt, a loose pile for a twelve-page contract, with page order living dangerously in filenames.
• TIFF can hold all pages in one file, but almost nothing outside print and archiving software opens it happily — browsers don't display it, upload forms refuse it, and many converters (ours included) read only its first page.
• PDF holds all pages in one file that everything opens — viewers, browsers, email previews, upload forms. For documents, it is the setting with no later regrets.

And when you need the pages as images anyway

Choosing PDF doesn't lock the pages away. Our PDF to JPG converter unfolds a scanned PDF into one image per page — up to 100 pages, in order, downloadable singly or as a ZIP — entirely in your browser. Scans are precisely the documents you don't want on a stranger's server, and this pipeline never uploads them. Text-heavy pages come out sharper via PNG output; photo pages travel lighter as JPG.

If you're already stuck with the wrong format

A multi-page TIFF that has to stay whole belongs to the scanner: rescan with PDF selected — five minutes now beats fighting the file forever. A single-page TIFF converts directly. A folder of loose JPEGs that should read as one document can be stitched vertically into a single tall image, or each converted to its own PDF page.

What we deliberately don't do

We don't reassemble multiple images into one multi-page PDF, and we don't OCR scans into searchable text. Both are jobs with real failure modes that deserve purpose-built tools — a converter that half-does them would mostly produce confident-looking broken documents.

• At the scanner, pick PDF for anything with more than one page.
• PDF unfolds into per-page images here, unuploaded, whenever images are needed.
• TIFF multi-page files are a dead end outside print software — rescan rather than fight.
